A Midsummer Day's Dream Print E-mail

           A Midsummer Day’s Dream

The thermometer registers in the nineties

The air is still and heavy

The dog is panting, the sun is high,

The birds are silent

It is the middle of summer

Long, hot days

Uneventful, unguarded, uncomplicated.

Somewhere, miles away, crops push their way toward harvest

And waves roar and tumble onto shore

Windswept forests sing their timeless songs,

And desert animals scurry in the shadows of cactus and rock.

Within a matter of hours night will fall,

The dark sky will glitter with moon and stars,

And sleep will force itself upon us.

Life will continue on uninterrupted

Appreciated or not,

The canvas of nature will go on

Being painted by the fingers of God.

In the midst of the offensive noise of our modem world

The people, the cars, the sounds, the smog, the heat, the pressures

There stand those reminders of His deep peace.

The running wave, the flowing air, the quiet earth,

The shining stars, the gentle night, the healing light

And from each the blessing of the deep peace of Christ to you and me.

Have you such peace, or is it nothing more than a midsummer-day’s dream?

If you must confess an absence of such peace,

May I suggest a simple change of scenery?

Visit the seashore and hear the running wave.

Take a drive out to the country,

Roll the windows down, and feel the air flowing through your hair.

Walk out into the night and look up at the stars.

Be still and discover anew that He is God

The longing of one’s heart for deep peace

Somehow recaptured in such settings

May the deep peace of our God cool and quiet our overheated souls.
