Originally, Tibiao was a small thriving community or settlement located in a place called “Olid”, ruled by redoubtable chieftain name “Oguid”. Paris, his only son succeeded him in ruling the tribe, brave and loved his people. He had them cultivate the hillside, except the low swampy places near the coast which where covered with “Katigabawan or Tigbaw”, a grass plant of the bamboo family growing abundant and luxuriant.
When Spaniards came to Antique, very much later in the century, the early Malays have spread out in the different parts of the province, and one of them was Oguid who chose the hillside of Olid, after his name, to be settlement as it was led by a big river, now the Tibiao River. Legend narrates that one day, a group of roving Spaniards surprised a group of natives who were fishing and picking up shells by the river. One of the Spaniards asked the natives as to what the name of the place is. The ignorant natives saw that the Spaniards were pointing at the place where “tigbaw” was all around. Not comprehending the Spanish language and thinking that he was asking the name of the grass plant, he answered “tigbaw”. The Spaniard thought that the answer to his question was the name of the place, accepted the fact that the place was “Tibyaw” as mispronounced by him. Therefore, the Spaniards named the place as “Tibyaw” or “Tibiao” as it is known now.
