LGUs urged to create system for regular blood donation Print E-mail
Posted by Philippine Information Agency

San Jose, Antique – The local government units are urged to create a system for regular blood donation to ensure adequate supply in hospitals and at the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC).

This call was made by Esther Buenventura, Administrator PNRC Antique during the meetings of Liga ng Mga Barangay which she attended and advocated for voluntary blood donation.

Buenaventura underscored the need for communities and LGUs to continue the blood donation program especially now there are increasing number of patients that need blood transfusion.

With the global warming and climate change, incidence of diseases which needs blood transfusion has increased like those with hemorrhagic dengue fever, likewise, cases of accidents (car/motorcycles, stab wounds, gunshots) have also increased.

If the patients need blood, we encouraged the family to bring blood donors to avoid delay and save lives, said Buenaventura.

Meanwhile, Health Secretary Francisco Duque in celebration of the World Donor Day on June 14 enjoins everyone to continue giving blood as the most precious gift to another person, a gift that will help heal the sick, re-invigorate the giver and will preserve life.

“We do not lose blood when we give some because blood regenerates itself.  As we donate blood, we refill our bodies with new and fresher blood”, said Secretary Duque.

According to records of the DOH-National Voluntary Blood Services Program (NVBSP), a total of 510,495 blood units were collected in 2006 where 72% of this amount came from volunteer blood donors and 28% from replacement donors. Last year, almost 85% of the blood donors were volunteers.

This year’s celebration has a theme “100% Voluntary Blood Donation”. World Blood Donor Day is an effort to commit the country’s volunteer blood donor to give blood more than once a year. This is also an opportunity for the government to congratulate these “givers of life” for their altruistic deed.

The World Blood Donor Day is spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO) which aims to emphasize the role blood donors play in saving lives and improving the health of millions. (PS Mabaquiao/PIA)
