Garandisadong Pambata campaign in Antique reached 89% of targeted children Print E-mail
Posted by Philippine Information Agency

In compliance to the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) in reducing child mortality, the Department of Health for the past years has conducted Garantisadong Pambata to improve the health and nutritional condition of children.

Garantisadong Pambata is an institutionalized pre-schoolers health campaign nationwide where a package of health services and relevant information is delivered twice a year, every April and October to under-5 year old children

The Philippines is one of 6 countries that contribute to 75% of all deaths among children below 5 years in the Western Pacific Region with 82,000 Filipino children dying before their 5th birthday.   Of the total underfive deaths (42/1000 Live Births), more than 2/3 (30/1000 LB) occur before the child’s first birthday.  Of these, majority (17/1000 LB) die within 28 days upon birth. The combined number of neonatal and postnatal deaths is almost thrice the number of deaths among 1-4 years old (12/1000 LB). (DOH news)

The underfive deaths were caused mainly by pneumonia, diarrhea and vaccine preventable diseases. Undernutrition account for more than half (53%) of all child deaths. The Philippines pledged to the UN Millennium Summit which resulted to the Millennium Goals, the 4th of which is to improve child health by reducing the underfive mortality rate by 2/3 in 2015.

For this year’s accomplishment, the Antique Provincial Health Office reported a total of 89% coverage of vitamin a supplementation and 87% for deworming of children 6-71 months.

Mildred Quilino, Information Officer of PHO said that the accomplishment was affected by the projected population which is higher as compared to the actual population.  Those who were not covered according to Quilino will be reached out during regular barangay visitation of midwives and other health workers.

Among the interventions which the local government units and the DOH employed to reduce child deaths and ensure survival among children are the following: attendance of skilled health professionals during pregnancy, delivery and the immediate post-partum, care of the  newborn, breastfeeding and complementary feeding, micronutrient supplementation and deworming, immunization of children and mothers, integrated management of sick children, child injury prevention and control, birth spacing, proper personal hygiene.
