GROWING UP AS REAL KIDS Print E-mail
Posted by Amie Isulat

GROWING UP AS REAL KIDS(To everyone who were born in 1950’s, 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s) (Pasensya lang ay English kag Kiniray-a dya, intiendiha nyu lang ah.. hindi man ko writer bay, trying lang.. hehehe Wink) Some of us here survived being born to mothers who did not have an OB-Gyne kundi “paltera” (as we use to call it in our own dialect) lang and drank San Miguel Beer (Pale Pilsen), Mucho, Tuba or whatever…. while they carried us.  While pregnant, they took cold or cough medicines, ate isaw, drink soft drinks and didn’t worry about diabetes.  Then after all that trauma, our baby cribs were made of hard wood covered with lead-based paints, pati ang walker naton, tig-a nga kahoy wara pa ti riring.  We had no soft cushy cribs that play music, no Pampers or disposable diapers (lampin lang),  kato tana ga bisekleta man kami, babaye lalaki wara man te helmets or kneepads, kun kaisa gani wara pa ti preno ang bisekleta (for rent pa ra dyan kauna sa Kamihanon), pa contest halin sa plaza (EVJ Freedom Park) paagto sa Provincial Hospital (kalye Real kang San Jose).  As children, we would ride in hot un-airconditioned buses with wooden seats (ang daan nga 76’ers kauna kag ang Bukaw bus nga ga byahe sa Norte), or cars with no airconditioning (kadya tanan may aircon ron), tricycle pa gani gale pirme or laban panaw lang paagto sa aragtunan kag pauli.  Riding on the back of a carabao on a breezy summer day in a friend’s hometown (I recalled somewhere in a barrio sa Dao) wuz’ considered a treat with matching picture pa ako kara (kadya tana wara ron ka kita kang karbaw ang mga bata), pero wara ron ma man-e kun diin ron to nga mga pictures akon ay pira ron ka bagyo nag agi sa balay halin kato, so siguro nag tarabog ron to e, ano abi ay hindi pa tana kato uso ang floopy disc, flashdrives/USBs/ or memory sticks.  We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle purchased from grocery stores or pharmacies (kun kaisa gani straight from gripo or bomba/jetmatic).  We shared one soft drink bottle with four of our friends, and no ONE actually died from this, or contacted Hepatitis.  We ate rice with Star Margarine, drank raw eggs straight from the shell or mixed with RC/Sarsi cola, and drank soft drinks with real sugar in it (hindi diet drinks), but we weren’t sick or overweight tungod.. WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!!  We would leave home in the morning and play all day; we would go back when the street lights came on.  Nami bay mag sipal lantay lantay, tumba patis, lagsanay, panago-ay kag pati pa gani Chinese garter pati boys intra ah.  No one was able to reach us all day (hindi uso ang cellphone, pocket pc’s or i-mates with touch pad).  And yes, we were okay.  My brothers and their playmates spend hours building wooden trolleys (ang bearing bala ang rida na) or plywood slides out of scraps and then ride down the street, only to find out they forgot the brakes! Hahahaha..! Laughing After hitting the sidewalk or falling into a canal (sewage chanel) a few times, they learn to solve the problem themselves with their bare and dirty hands.  We did not have Play Stations, Nintendo’s, Game boys, PSPs, X-boxes, no video or computer games at all, no 100 or 1000 Channels on cable or Satellite Decoders, no DVD movies, no surround stereo, home theaters, no i pod’s, no cell phones, no computers/wireless communications, no Internet, no Sky chat or Chat rooms, no Friendster, YM’s, hi5, multiply, and so on…. WE HAD REAL FRIENDS and we went outside to actually talk and play with them!  We fall out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no stupid lawsuits from these accidents.  The only rubbing we get is from our friends with the words…te sakit gid?  Pero kun naga ugot ang playmate mo… ang hambalon na kanimo….teh man namit mo?!  Tongue out Heheheh..  We played marbles (holen) with the boys in the dirt, wash our hands just a little and ate dirty ice cream or ice buko.  We were not afraid of getting germs in our stomach.  The boys and even us (girls) had to live with homemade guns nga himo sa kahoy, nga gin higutan lang kang lastiko, sulpot, tirador kag kun ano ano pa nga pwede nga makasakit, pero sadya man gihapon kami tanan.  We made up games with sticks (pikyaw), and cans (tumba patis) and ‘though we were told they were dangerous,  te wara man ti may nabulag o napatay, pero kun kaisa may naga ka buklan gid man e.  We walked, rode bikes, or took tricycles to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them to come out of the house.  Mini basketball and volleyball teams in our barangay had tryouts and not everyone made the team.  Those who didn’t pass had to learn to deal with the disappointment. That generation of ours has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers, creative thinkers and successful professionals ever!  They are the CEO’s, Engineers, Doctors and high rank military officials (ang mga gurang kanamon) of today.  The past years had been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.  We had failure, success, and responsibility.  We learned from our mistakes the hard way.  ‘Em sharing this to others who’ve had the luck to grow up as real kids.  We were lucky indeed.  I hope that the younger ones could read this, so they will know how their parents grew up or how brave we are as real kids. (sara ron ko dyan kara hahaha).  It kind of what makes you go out and climb a tree, or even sa atup kang tupad balay nyu?!  Hehehe..  Smile

Note:  The Capital letters are becoz’ your eyes may not be able to read this if they were typed any smaller (at your age) intended sa mga magurang pa kanakon. Hahaha… Laughing

The buttom line of this write-up is that kang una hindi man hi-tech as what the writer said sa ana nga masterpiece pero somehow ang gina tawag bala nga produkto kang naka ligad sang sa kadya nga hinirasyun they learned sa anda nga naging experienced. Kang una wara man gatas nga Promil, Nido plus etc. pero taho naka dangat man sa bulan, naging successful man sanda sa anda nga kinabuhi. Swerti lang gid man kita kadya kay rudyan run ang tanan we can make thing easy by doing like this or like that, we can make friends all over the world through technologies pero diba mas manami ang mag storya sakay sa karusa sige dilap kang ice buko sang sa storya sa voicechat burubuhay utod connection mo! By the time goes on and on new generation and era’s will come but don’t forget yesterday that brings you today.

Mabrook!!!
Nice comments Curll, amega Jelay, Me Team, SprakakZ, 123456, and Brye! Good and I do appreciate that you all still can relate to my story 'though you're almost half the age of it! hahaha..! Even with my Jara, who'd been brought up in a foreign country, with a totally different culture, I would take time to relate to her the things that I had been before as a kid. 'Though she may not be able to experience those things.. at least she would have an idea and would know how brave we are and how simple life is before but somehow we were able to manage and come up to where we are right now.

Have a nice day!
