A total of 2,671 indigent patients availed of medical consultation and free medicines during the Medical Mission “Sagip Tulong ni President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (Sagip Tulong ni PGMA) in Valderrama, Antique recently.
“Responding to the needs of the poor and the underprivileged is one of the major thrust of the Arroyo Administration,” said Mayor Mary Joyce Roquero of Valderrama and the President of Mayor’s League of the Philippines Antique chapter during the launching of the medical mission.
The devastating effects brought about by typhoon Frank last month left many families helpless and in dire need of health/medical services. The free medicines and consultation in about 19 barangays in Valderrama (mostly upland areas and near river banks) has lighten the load of many families that instead of sparing money for consultation it went instead to meet other basic needs like food, said Leonardo Mandigal, Information Officer of Valderrama.
Philippine Amusement Gaming Corporation ( PAGCOR) sent 3 doctors, 3 pharmacist and 3 medical staff to assist the local medical team from the Delegate Angel Salazar Memorial Hospital and Rural Health Unit of Valderrama headed by Dr. Helen Lacson.
The Medical Mission was conducted in two batches where adjacent barangays are clustered to ensure patients availed of the services said Mandigal.
Governor Salvacion Z. Perez, Vice Governor Rhodora Cadiao and other officials in the Provincial government were in full support during the medical mission particularly in Barangay Lublub where patients from mountain barangays of Alon, Bakiang, Busog, Cansilayan, Culyat and San Agustin converge and sought medical assistance.
The other cluster of Medical Mission was held in Valderrama Elementary School that catered families from Barangay Buluangan 1&2, Binanogan, Bunsod, Canipayan, Iglinab, Igmasandig, Manlacbo, Pandanan, Takas, Tigmamale and Ubos.
Aside from Medical Mission, the Municipal Government has also distributed 998 PhilHealth Cards to indigent families. Early Child Care and Development learning materials from the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office were also distributed to 16 barangays in the amount of P85,000.00.
Also in support to the goal of keeping children in Valderrama well nourished, the Phil National Police sponsored a feeding program that served 125 children and 48 lactating mothers. Office of the Municipal Agriculturist likewise, provided vegetable seeds to farmers in different barangays.
The concerted efforts of the national agencies and the local government units is in support to PGMA’s ‘Labanan and Kahirapan’ Program. (PS Mabaquiao/PIA)
