San Jose, Antique – Seeing the need to strengthen its campaign against criminality and ensure public safety, DILG Sec. Ronaldo Puno issued a memorandum circular to all Local Chief Executives to reorganize the Brgy Peace and Order Committees (BPOCs) with the election of new set of brgy. officials.

Puno said there is a need to maintain and enhance peace and order as well as guarantee the effective delivery of safety services to all communities nationwide.

Each BPOC serves as the implementing arm of the city or municipality in carrying out their respective integrated area/public safety plan and is tasked with supervising, coordinating and monitoring the operation of all community based anti-crime activities undertaken in every barangay, Sec. Puno explained.

The DILG secretary suggested that the barangay public safety plan which serves as the official planning document of each BPOC should contain the major areas of concern; crime prevention and control, counter insurgency and terrorism, fire prevention and suppression, disaster management and control, and environmental enhancement.

Maza said that initial briefings in terms of functions were conducted among BPOC members, the counterpart of the Provincial Peace and Order Council in the barangays.

The training of barangay tanods in some barangays were likewise conducted with the Philippine National Police spearheading the activity.

In view of the important role of Tanods in public safety and security aspects, Director Maza expressed the need to provide Tanods with Life and Accident Insurance Coverage and educational benefits or scholarship privileges  for their children like other barangay officials.
