San Jose, Antique – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources conducted a seminar on Mangrove Nursery Establishment and Management to students of Polytechnic State College of Antique-(PSCA) College of Maritime Education.
About 40 students taking up Seafaring and Stewardship Catering Crew attended the seminar which discussed the importance of mangroves in marine ecosystem presented by Jesse L. Vego, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer. Other topics discussed are mangrove nursery establishment and protection and maintenance of mangroves.
The College of Maritime Education (CMEd) of PSCA has been working with the Barangay Council and residents of Pacencia, Tobias Fornier for the rehabilitation and management of their Mangrove areas. Professors and Instructors of PSCA-CMEd also attended the training and are extending all out support to the outreach program of the students.
Students, barangay officials and educators of the college also conducted collection of propagules in Nogas Island, Anini-y (adjacent town) to be use for nursery establishment in Barangay Pacensia.
Meanwhile, the DENR is also intensifying their efforts for the Green Philippines Program with the launching of Nursery for Indigenous Trees Species Project by no less than the pioneer of the Luntiang Pilipinas Program Senator Loren Legarda, recently held in San Jose, Antique.
Legarda also committed to provide funds to every municipality in the province for nursery establishment. Regional Director Normelyn E. Claudio of DENR during the launching also expressed her commitment to mobilize people in the department to make the project successful.
Green Philippines Project hopes to contribute to the efforts of government in mitigating the ill effects of global warming and climate change. Trees fight the greenhouse or global warming effect by sequestering carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas, and turning it into oxygen during its food-making process or photosynthesis. They also help cleanse the air by intercepting airborne particles, reducing heat and absorbing such pollutants as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide.
