The Olympic torch has been lit last 24th this month in front of the Temple of Hera on the historic grounds of Olympia, in the birthplace of Olympus, where the Ancient Olympic Games took place. The flame was lit successfully by a Holy Priestess, according to the traditional ritual, using the sun’s rays and a parabolic mirror. The torch passed over the tomb of Pierre de Coubertin to launch the harmony of the long journey. From there, the torch will be crossing 5 continents, stopping in 21 cities around the world before reaching China, this year's host of the Olympic Games.
The torch will travel across Greece, the site of the first modern Olympic Games which was held way back on 1896. Significant Olympic winners were assigned to carry the torch, passing them to different cities. The torch symbolizes harmony and bringing the message of peace to different nationalities, cultures and creeds”, according to IOC President Jacques Rogge. |
