In Antique, the Provincial Health Office reported a decrease in number of malnourished children from 13, 629 in 2006 to 12,917 this year. Government intervention, community support and cooperation of depressed families have helped a lot to uplift the nutrition status of more than 700 children in the province, said Dr. Norman Tanchuan, Provincial Health Officer.

Among the top five towns with high incidence of malnutrition are Caluya, Tobias Fornier, Hamtic, Patnongon and Libertad. These towns, according to Tanchuan need sustained hunger mitigation measures to help children achieve a good nutritional status. Ranking of municipalities in the province were based on Operation Timbang conducted by the Department of Health.

Hunger mitigation measures help reduce hunger incidence rate

San Jose, Antique (25 September) -- Hunger incidence in the country dropped considerably in the second quarter to 14.7% from 19% in the first quarter of this year.

President said earlier that the government's hunger mitigation measures such as provision of Tindahan Natin outlets, Barangay Food Terminals and the Food for School Program greatly contributed to the decrease in hunger incidence rate.

Supporting the said measures is the strong peso that has absorbed the impact of the current high prices of oil in the world market, the President said. The government has allocated P181million for the hunger mitigation measures that resulted in the establishment of 6,583 Tindahan Natin outlets in most depressed areas in the country and P2.75 billion for the school feeding program this year.
