DepEd breeds tomorrow's leaders

By Hannibal Cayetano Talete

MANILA, Sept. 6 -- Some 2,500 third year and fourth year high school students from all over the country gathered at the 5th National Leadership Training for Student Government Officers (NLTSGO) in Baguio City.

To be held on September 6-10 at the Baguio Teachers' Camp, the event aims to develop and implement a school-based peer counseling program that will bring about a more conducive learning environment in schools across the nation.

Education Secretary Jesli Lapus said that some of the country's top movers and shakers in industry, politics, media and show business will be mentoring high school student who have been elected officers of supreme councils in their respective schools.

"We must continue investing in our future leaders through seminars that will empower them with management and leadership knowledge, so this early they can initiate reforms in their respective spheres of influence," Lapus said.

"I encourage the participants to make the most of the sessions, share it with their peers and---be the change the society needs," Lapus added.

Former Vice President Teofisto Guingona, DepEd Undersecretaries Vilma Labrador, Ramon Bacani, Teodosio Sangil and other DepEd key officials will also serve as speakers in the event.

This year's theme is: "Responding to the Needs of the 21st century Leadership: Equipping Student-Leaders in Reaching Out to Peers". The training aims to equip student-leaders with basic orientation and competencies in organizing, developing and implementing a school-based peer counseling program to help create a better school environment.

DepEd's Center for Students and Co-Curricular Affairs (DepEd-CSCA), in partnership with the Master's Lighthouse Foundation (TMLF) and the Ateneo Student Trainers (STRAINS), will conduct NLTSGO.

Sessions on peer counseling and mentoring will include Head Coach of RP Team Chot Reyes, founder of the R.A Gapuz Review Center for nurses Ray Gapuz, and educator Henry Tenedero as speakers. Other speakers include: master trainer Anthony Pangilinan and UP Professor Yangky Agustin,

Among the guest performers during socials and break-out sessions are Rachel Alejandro, Nanette Inventor, Jimmy Bondoc, Noel Cabangon, and DepEd youth spokesperson Sam Concepcion.

Another highlight of the event is the election of student leaders representing two political parties. Each party will come up with their own platforms and officers. The exercise will culminate in a "Miting de Avance", to discuss issues, and an election.

NLTSGO, which kicked off in 2003, is comprised of plenary sessions, interactive break-out sessions and enriched discussions, as well as consultations among officials, student-leaders and teacher-advisers. (hct)
