A brave and beautiful Filipino feminist novel
Posted by Fridy Pe Panaguiton
Sunday, 16 May 2010
ImageFRENCH feminist critic Helen Cixous, in her essay “The Laugh of the Medusa," bravely stipulates that “the woman writer should write her self" if she wants to “reclaim her voice" and “reclaim her body that was confiscated by patriarchal society." This confiscation leads to women being subordinate to men that they cannot even enjoy their own bodies, literally and figuratively.

If only Cixous could read a novel in Filipino (Visayan-laced Filipino, to be specific), she might enjoy intellectual ecstasy in reading the latest book of Genevieve L. Asenjo, a novel called Lumbay ng Dila (Loneliness of the Tongue).

Set in the bucolic province of Antique and chaotic Taft Avenue in Manila, this is the story of a young literature teacher in a university, Sadyah Lopez. She is looking for herself in the city and also looking for her long-lost mother, Teresa, a former commander of the New People’s Army in Panay who is now an NGO worker.

ImageThe Lin-ay kang Antique 2010 held at the EBJ Memorial Sports Complex, Binirayan, San Jose last April 23, 2010, as one of the highlights of Binirayan Festival this year with the theme “ Biray sa bago-ng paglaum para sa mga Antiqueño”, was a showcase not just of glamour, beauty and wit but also of historical and cultural pride. This is because, for the second time since last year, the community of the indigenous people in the province or the Ati was given the chance to participate in the said prestigious annual event represented by their Lin-ay Lanilyn Sanchez of Brgy. Masayo, Tobias Fornier. Thus, once again they are given the opportunity to be heared, known, loved and remembered not just by younger generations but by the rest of the world.
