EBJ heroism remembered
Posted by Philippine Information Agency
Wednesday, 17 February 2010

San Jose, Antique – Thousands of Antiqueños paid tribute to commemorate the 24th martyrdom of the late Governor Evelio B. Javier (EBJ) on Thursday.
Governor Evelio B. Javier was murdered in broad daylight in front of the new capitol of Antique while safeguarding the ballots of 2006 snap presidential election on February 11,1986 which contributed to the EDSA People Power Revolution.

EBJ, Antique’s hero, a man of impossible dreams and a courageous fighter of justice and democracy not only for Antiqueños but also for peace loving Filipinos who marched to EDSA and topple a dictatorship that eventually restored a long-dreamt democracy.  On February 25, we will also commemorate the 24th EDSA People Power Revolution.

Eduardo “Edu” Manzano, candidate for vice president of the administration joined the Antiqueños in this historic event at the ANS Gymnasium.  Manzano said that Evelio like other heroes gave his life for the love of country. He further challenged the Antiqueños not to allow the dreams of Evelio to fade away instead for each one to live for the country by becoming part of the solutions to the problem on unemployment, poor access to education and limited access to science and technology.

Congressman Exequiel Javier, younger brother of Evelio, expressed gratitude in behalf of his family for the love they gave to Evelio and appealed to everyone not to forget that the late governor died to safeguard the ballots of the sovereign people of Antique during the 1986 snap election.
Meanwhile, the provincial government of Antique through the Provincial Historical and Cultural Council in a separate program also honored the martyrdom of EBJ at the new capitol fronting the park where he was assassinated on February 11, 1986.

Governor Salvacion Z. Perez in her remarks extolled Evelio for his genuine love for Antiqueños that they may rise from the bondage of poverty and be proud of their identity.

Hundreds of supporters, family, friends, government employees and local officials joined the commemoration by attending Eucharistic celebration, wreath laying at the statue of EBJ, candle lighting ceremonies and other activities expressing admiration to his heroic deeds. (PSM/PIA)
