The GMA Kapuso Foundation will be leaving Iloilo City for Antique to bring
relief goods ASAP. The foundation is appealing to the PRIVATE sector for
assistance: We need a truck to transfer the goods and vehicles for the staff
members and military escorts.

PHILIPPINE EMBASSY NEWS RELEASE

PGMA thanks U.S. gov't for extending help to typhoon
Frank's victims

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo
personally thanked today the United States government
for the support it is extending to the victims of
typhoon Frank.

The President expressed the Philippines’ gratitude
during her meeting with US State Department Deputy
Secretary John Negroponte at the Willard Hotel here.

''We are deeply grateful for the help by the US
government...'' the President said.

The US pledged to send P4 million (or roughly
$100,000) worth of emergency relief goods through the
Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC).

The US Navy Ship Stockton, with rescue helicopters on
board, is now on its way to Sibuyan Island off Romblon
to help in the rescue and recovery of the passengers
of sunken MV Princess of the Stars.

The US Navy P-3 maritime aircraft was also ordered to
help in the search for survivors.

Negroponte said President George W. Bush would
personally convey tomorrow to the President the US
government’s ''condolences to the Filipino people.''

''We want to express our condolences to the government
of the Philippines and the people, particularly those
who have been affected by the tragedy,'' Negroponte
said.

''Our hearts go out to the government and people of
the Philippines, particularly the victims of this
terrible tragedy which has just occurred,'' he added.

Typhoon Frank left hundreds of dead and missing with
an estimated P1.45 billion in damages.

US Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Kenney, who
is also here for the President's visit to the US
capital city, echoed Negroponte's statement that
President Bush would convey the US government's
condolences when the two leaders meet tomorrow at the
Oval Offic

Plane-load of relief goods and water purifiers flown
this afternoon to Aklan

A military cargo plane loaded with relief goods and
water purifier sets is scheduled to fly to Kalibo,
Aklan this afternoon to deliver government assistance
to the victims of typhoon Frank, Presidential Deputy
Spokesman Anthony Golez said.

Golez, also the deputy administrator of the National
Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC), said the C130
military cargo plane will fly to Kalibo as soon as the
relief goods and water purifier units are placed on
board the plane by the members of the Philippine Air
Force (PAF).

"So dadalhin po namin (relief goods and water
purification systems) as soon as mapuno iyong C130,"
Golez said in a radio interview this morning.

He said that the water purification sets were the
urgent request of Aklan local officials of after their
water purifiers were damaged by the mudslides and
flashfloods when typhoon Frank (international
codename: Fengshen) crossed to their province Sunday.

Golez assured that all government agencies are helping
each other to attend and provide necessary help and
assistance to the victims of typhoon Frank.

Aside from government agencies, he said, other private
entities and non-government organizations are now
working with the NDCC on how they will help the
victims of calamities.

He said the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the
Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) are helping in the
rescue efforts in all areas affected by the typhoon.

On the ongoing search and rescue operations at the
site of the M/V Princess of the Stars that capsized
off Sibuyan in Romblon, Golez revealed that the US
Navy Ship under Commodore Bradley Smith reached
Sibuyan Island – which is located 17-20 miles from the
sunken ship – at around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Golez also said that around noon on Tuesday, Smith
motored to the town hall of San Fernando, Romblon to
get a briefing from local authorities in-charge of the
search and rescue operations.

Right now, he added that coordination between
Philippine and US rescue teams is being conducted for
the rescue efforts.

On Monday, at least 57 survivors and 20 fatalities of
the ship have been recovered in Mulanay town, Quezon,
and Burias Island, northwest of the ferry wreckage off
Sibuyan Island in the central Philippines.
